Help connect with your neighbours

 

Emerging theme

Make the neighbourhood better, which involves a myriad of actions and conversations around safety, beauty and logistics. This is both needed and enabled by the fact that people come together around a common goal. Not only will the experience help neighbours connect to one another, but it will also bring them together around the specific issues that they care about and help them recruit further to lobby for a goal. Pressure the city to fix the curb or plant more trees, let everyone know about suspicious people going around and ask your neighbours to be on the look out are some examples of what this experience will enable. The main purpose is to provide a foundation to make relationships last and be valuable for existing neighbours as well as new people joining in. 

 

Discovery (how to identify neighbours?)

Google Now recommendations, invitations, regular search, new home welcome kits with QR codes are some examples of entry points. The experience presented in this document is using a large residential complex example but the main theme can apply (with slight tweaks) to any kind of neighbourhood.

 

What is it that we are creating?

A social platform for neighbours to connect, exchange ideas, rant, and mobilise. This can either be a separate platform, or an extension of Google Plus (hence the interface alignment presented in the wires and visuals).

 

The feeds and the actions

In addition to connecting neighbours with similar profiles and interests, the platform will help members find city resources to make what they want to make easier and solve issues for the neighbourhood. Using data mining, city related information will post automatically on the newsfeed. Things like water or electricity shutdowns, football matches, road closures, etc. Essentially, it will provide a whole feed about city related updates that will affect the neighbourhood. 

 

Beyond this there is the personal feed, which will be more personalised around common areas of interest. Our phones know a lot about us, what we like, what we do, where we go, how often, etc. So it can start to surface connections between people based on common interests, like going to similar events in the city, similar restaurants, taking the same train to work every morning, or kids attending the same school (which can be a carpool opportunity), etc. Neighbours often do exactly the same things but they are simply separate in time so they never see each other and surfacing the right type of information at the right time can incredibly enhance how they connect with one another

 

Finally, the platform will enable users to generate actions to help the neighbourhood. It will provide resources and surface the relevant processes then help get neighbours to work together towards making these actions happen.
